HOW TO PLAY Game Of 45



4 Player Game Instructions:

OBJECTIVE:

In the Game of 45, players must get 45 points in their "Home Row". The Home Row is the first, horizontal row of 10 squares that faces the player (with the words "gameof45" in the middle eight). The 45 points are obtained by collecting one of each numbered tile: 0-9 (0+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45) in no particular order, in the Home Row.

Once a player has collected 45 points in their Home Row, they attempt to score bonus points in 1 of any of the other rows (excluding Home Rows). This includes vertical rows, horizontal rows, or either of the two diagonal rows of ten X'ing the board through the center.

To Begin a 4 Player Game:

PLAYERS DRAW FOR FIRST PLAY:

Players draw for first play by each taking a tile from the pouch. The player who draws the highest number goes first. Once the first player has been decided, players return all tiles to the pouch, close it, and shake.

The decided first player then draws nine, random tiles from the pouch, arranging eight on their TRAY, and the ninth on the RIGHT-CORNER SQUARE of their Home Row.

THE TILES IN THE TRAY: The eight tiles in the tray may be arranged in any order, however once the game has commenced it is illegal for a player to re-order his or her tray tiles. The eight tray tiles represent the eight absent, middle tiles in the player's Home Row. The Home Row remains empty of tiles until the end of the game, when the Home Row tiles are revealed on the board to the other players.

THE RIGHT-CORNER TILE: Once placed, the right-corner tiles are fixed and may not be moved or discarded. Also, none of the four corner tiles may be the same number.

Once the first player has placed his or her corner tile, play will continue clockwise.

GAMEPLAY: Once all four players have arranged their 8 tiles on their respective trays, and all the four corner tiles are in place on the board, first player draws a tile from the pouch. The tile may be either:

Kept.

1. Placed on the board onto any legal, open space.

-OR-

2. Traded for any tile from the player's tray, which must be placed onto any legal, open space.

-OR-

3. Player does not draw from pouch, and instead takes a tile from the board (excluding the fixed corner tiles). If player takes a tile from the board, player again must place a number from their tray onto the board. In this case the discarded number MUST be placed at the same spot player picked from the board.

Anytime a tile is placed onto the board it is subject to-

The 45 Rule: No tile may repeat in any row, column or diagonal.

Tiles may always be arranged in any order in a row, however every number must be present in the row, without duplicate numbers. It is illegal for any number in a row to appear twice. Example: You cannot place a 6 in a square that is part of any row - vertical, horizontal or either of the two diagonals - where there is another 6 present.

If a number cannot be played because of the 45 Rule:

Once the board begins to fill up with tiles, this situation becomes more likely to occur. If a number cannot be played legally, the number gets placed to the side, off the board, and the next player takes their turn.

Play continues until someone calls out 45. NOTE: It's an OPEN BOARD until someone calls "45".

HOW TO WIN: There are two ways of playing. You can play 4 rounds, or play to 300 or 500. The player with the most points wins.

SCORING: The first way to score is with the 45 points in the player's Home Row, (the 8 tiles in player's tray and the 2 on the corners of the board). Once the Home Row and one bonus row is complete the player calls out 45 and forces everyone to place their Home Row tiles visible onto the board.

BONUS POINTS:

In the 4 player version of the game, it is possible to collect bonus points in 1 additional row to the Home Row by being the person to put the last tile.

Horizontal and Vertical rows:

If the bonus is won in a horizontal or vertical row, the end pieces will consist of the corresponding tiles in the trays of the opposite players. The unseen tile to the player who calls 45 on a bonus row will affect scoring in the following ways:

•If ONE of the numbers completing a 45 is in an opponent's row, the player scores a bonus of 45 + 20 (= 65 POINTS). So scoring would look like this to end that round, Home Row: 45pts + Bonus: 65pts (= 110 POINTS)

•If TWO of the numbers completing a 45 are in two opponents' rows and the player scores a bonus of 45 + 30 (= 75 POINTS). Your score at the end of this round would be, Home Row: 45 + Bonus: 75pts (=130 POINTS)

•If the numbers do not complete a 45 from the opponent's row(s), the player scores 45 points minus the value of the numbers that are missing (example: if the missing tiles in a row are 1 and 3, the value subtracted from 45 is 4 = 41 bonus points. Scoring would look like this to end that round, Home Row: 45pts + Bonus: 41pts (= 86 POINTS)

Diagonal rows:

There are only 2 - the two diagonal rows of 10, X'ing through the board):

•If the bonus 45 on the board is on a diagonal, the winning player scores an additional 45 points. Final score would be, Home Row: 45pts + Bonus: 45pts (=90 POINTS)

Home Row:

•If any of the remaining players has a 45 in his/her Home Row, those players score 45 points. Players that do not have a 45 in their Home Row when another player calls 45 score 0 points.

•If a player calls out a 45 in error, player gets a penalty of -5 points, and play resumes until someone calls out 45 again.

FAQs:

Q: What if an illegal move has been played without anyone noticing?

A: Remember to pay attention, and keep an eye on your fellow players - it's part of the overall strategy! If, however, it is discovered after the fact that an illegal tile was played (thereby creating a duplicate in a row(s)) players may correct the error by moving the tile to a bordering, legal square. Or, if a correction is not possible or disrupts other players game play, game shall continue without counting the tile, and all associated rows are forfeited from anyone being able to score bonus points on them.

Q: What if there is a tile(s) on the board that forms a duplicate in my Home Row? Should I move one of the tiles, either on my tray or on the board?

A: No, do not move any tiles. Even though the "45" rule states that no tile may repeat in any row, column or diagonal, it only pertains to the playing field of the board. The Home Rows are the exception. Once the Home Row tiles are ordered by the player on the tray, remember, the rules state the tiles are not allowed to be moved again under any circumstances during the game. Other players may unknowingly put down tiles on the board that create one or more duplicates in your Home Row, just as you may do the same. That said, it is not in a player’s interest to willingly create a duplicate tile in their Home Row, as the player would be blocking them self from potentially scoring more bonus points in that row.

2 Player Game Instructions:

The 2 Player Game differs from the 4 Player version in that, in the 2 Player version opponents sit across from each other, and the two empty Home Rows are used as open playable rows. The players each draw 10 tiles now, instead of 9,and place two corner tiles on the left and right side of their Home Rows.As in the 4 Player version, corner pieces cannot be moved at all throughout the game. And tiles may not be “shuffled” or reordered on the tray.

BONUS ROWS:

The 2 Player Game requires one additional row – one must be vertical, plus either a horizontal or diagonal - for a total of 2 additional rows, before “45” can be called. However points are only counted on two (= 45 points in Home Row + the vertical row). The two additional rows may not be in the same direction(example: two vertical rows).
